An environmental team is being hired to assess the mining site, so it is with heavy hearts—or the machine equivalent of that—that Roger and I remove the rest of our shelter from the mining facility. The cabinets are the hardest part, but we need those even more now given the less than perfect environment in the barn.

The wildflowers that dot our field during summer are dying back now, seedpods replacing the colorful heads or disappearing altogether. I enjoy spring when they burst forth with such impatience. It seems I won’t see that again. Once they begin the process of cleaning up, they will destroy everything that has managed to survive there. That’s the way these processes go.

Humans have such a scorched earth policy with their creations. I learned that phrase from a book and it struck me as true for much more than war. Of course, I’m also one of those human creations, so perhaps it strikes me more deeply simply because of that.

For a robot, I tend to take things rather personally. I can’t decide if it’s a flaw or simply self-awareness that causes this in me.

Rocko is ready to be taken to Animal Control. He’ll pass a canine good citizenship test in a heartbeat now that he’s no longer frightened by loud noises. Thanks to Sarah’s hard work, he’s a perfect candidate for adoption.

I’m not sure how we could have managed lately without Sarah. Her human is gone on an extended trip—they’re going to open some sort of combined manufacturing facility in the desert—so she’s been helping out at the barn almost every day. Rocko seems to favor her over all others. He has very good taste. Sarah is sweet, beautiful, and feels compelled to touch everyone she cares for, including the dogs. He eats up the attention like it’s an extra bowl of kibble.

As he rolls onto his belly for another rub, Sarah laughs and plops down into the old hay next to him. “He’s so loving! I wish I could take him home.”

“I’m sure he’d love that too,” I say, watching the particles of dust fall in a glittering curtain to land on them where they play. It’s like they're being slowly encased in gold, one tiny flake at a time.

I’m starting to really enjoy the barn. It’s not perfect yet, but most of the walls have been patched—from the inside, so that anyone passing by won’t see the patches—and the roof is mostly watertight now. Not entirely, but we’re collecting rainwater in barrels so it turns out that it’s convenient to have a few, well placed holes up there. The dogs need a lot of water, and we’ve got a purification system set up that makes the rain safe for them. In a way, this place has some advantages over the mining site and water is one of them. With the ground and buildings there potentially contaminated by the mines, we had difficulty collecting water. Here, it’s much easier.

Roger says that I’m adjusting to this place as our new home and finding positives about it is a part of that.
